Eye- witnesses say five US soldiers killed in two attacks, Pentagon denies it
Iraq-USA, Military, 7/2/2003

A spokesman for the the Pentagon denied the killing of any American soldier in Iraq on Monday, but admitted that six were wounded in attacks launched by Iraqi resistance men.

The statements of the spokesman came after eye witnesses had told the Qatari al-Jazira TV in Baghdad that five soldiers were killed in two separate attacks.

According to the witnesses, three American soldiers and an Iraqi translator were killed in an attack against American armored vehicles in al-Mustansareyah area to the north of Baghdad.

News agency quoted eye witnesses as saying that unidentified persons in a white car fired RPJ shells at an American Jeep near al-Mustansareyah oil station. The witnesses said they saw the soldiers withdrawing four of their gravely wounded colleagues from the burning vehicle.

Witnesses said that two American soldiers were wounded when an armored vehicle fell in a trench on the road while the passersby set fire in a second vehicle in al-Yousefeyah, 20 Km to the south of Baghdad.

In Abu Gharib area, an American truck was exposed to an attack by shelling and the volume of casualties was not known as the American forces immediately evacuated the site of the incident.

The US defense secretary underplayed the importance of the almost daily attacks against American forces in Iraq. He rejected what was stated that these forces are facing gangs war or are in a swamp.

On the other hand, the US forces on Monday evening detained the daughter of Taha Yassin Ramadan, the former Iraqi vice President, together with her six children in Baghdad under the pretext that she is sheltering her father, the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein at her house and another vice President in her house.

Eye witnesses in Baghdad said that some members of Ramadan's daughter family were wounded when the American forces stormed into the house.

In a related incident, the family of the former chairman of the Iraqi national council Sadoun Hammadi has appealed the UN and humanitarian organizations to interfere to release Hammadi who was arrested by the American forces on May 29th, despite the fact he is not listed in the American 55 -member list of Iraqis wanted by the American forces.
