Explosions in Iraq: scores killed, wounded
Iraq, Local, 7/1/2003

The Iraqis yesterday had two bloody incidents, the first was near al-Haditha city where scores were killed in an ammunition warehouse and the second in al-Falouja, which is rebellious against the Americans, where 3 explosions took place and resulted in killing 8 persons and 15 wounded, including Fiqh ( Islamic jurisprudence students), a mosque Imam, speculated to be a result of American air raids.

One of the explosions in al-Falouja targeted al-Hassan mosque in the military quarters. Witnesses said that they saw a bloc of fire penetrating the roof of the mosque. The city hospital said that the persons who were killed are Fiqh students and among the wounded is the mosque's Imam whose leg was cut.

Meantime, al-Haditha city to the north-west of Baghdad witnessed a large explosion in an ammunition warehouse, whose victims are estimated by medical sources in scores.

Dr. Najm Eddine al-Anni said " it is impossible to give precise figure because the bodies are burnt and the roof of the warehouse fell on the victims." The deserted large ammunition warehouse is situated in the outskirts of al-Haqlamiyah village.

The explosion took place on Saturday. Aqeed Mohsin Hallas ( 27 year old) whose body is covered with burns said " at the moment of the explosion we were 100, distributed in the garage or abroad," noting that the poor people used to come from various parts of the area every morning to dismantle spearheads of the shells and to take off the explosive items and load the shells in trucks for selling the copper material to traders.
