Sudan: al-Bashir promises to achieve peace within one month
Sudan, Politics, 7/1/2003
During the celebration held to mark his 14th years in power, the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir yesterday announced that peace in Sudan has become near.
In a celebration held in the southern Jouba town in front of 30,000 of his supporters, attended by the secretary general of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, al-Bashir said "we will come back to Jouba after one month from now to celebrate peace and the end of war."
Al-Bashir told the crowd that they do not need ammunition and guns, rather residential areas, curricula books, medicines, electricity and telephones. He added that the southern and northern people of Sudan need to work together to rebuild a united Sudan free of sectarianism and overwhelmed by development and unity.
Moussa, for his part, hoped that peace will prevail in Sudan very soon, promising to work for ensuring Arab aid for Sudan.
