Wafiq al-Samaree searched for Saddam Hussein; Sunday Times: al-Rawi is hiding in the desert
Iraq, Politics, 6/30/2003
The British daily Sunday Times said yesterday that the chief of staff of the Iraq's disbanded Republican Guards army units in the former Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein, Seif Eddine Faleih Hassan Taha al-Rawi, is hiding in a small city in the heart of the desert after he had pretended he was dead and organized a fake funeral for himself.
The paper added that al-Rawai who is ranked number 12 in the American list for most wanted Iraqi officials is hiding, several hundreds of kilometers from Baghdad. The paper continued that al-Rawi by the end of the war initiated rumors saying that he was killed during the attack against Baghdad's airport. The paper explained it had received its information from persons who are "trust worthy mediators," noting that those mediators quoted al-Rawi his description of the drastic moment when "Saddam Hussein asked his two sons after he was toppled to accept the defeat and for each to go his own way."
According to Rawi, Hussein told his two sons Ode and Qusai while they were in the streets of the capital Baghdad on April 11, two days after its collapse "everything is gone." The paper added, quoting al-Rawi that Qusai cried and asked for a permission to hide with his father, but Hussein answered "if we are separated we will have better chances to survive." On the other hand, the former chief of the Iraqi military intelligence Wafiq al-Samaree said yesterday that Saddam Hussein is hiding in the desert near Sameraa to the north of Baghdad, adding "I am going to search for him."
Al-Samaree' added he had taken this decision following fire attacks against his house on Saturday night by "Saddam's men." He added "we have a lot of information indicating that he is in the area even if he was not seen by any one.. we will brief the Americans with the information we gathered."
