Al-Shara press conference with Irish counterpart
Syria-Ireland, Politics, 6/30/2003
Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara has called on giving the Palestinians more time to accomplish their national dialogue.
During a joint press conference with Ireland's Foreign Minister, Brian Cowen held in Aleppo yesterday, al-Shara stressed that Syria is blessing any agreement among Palestinians aiming at stabilizing this national unity.
Answering questions about the Roadmap," al -Shara said that "Syria understands the big Palestinian suffering in the occupied territories and understands the absence of security there caused by the brutal Israeli practices against the unarmed Palestinian people."
He indicated that the last statement of the Quartet Committee was positive because it included the "just and comprehensive peace requirements."
About the Syrian - American relations future, Foreign Minister said that we hope that this relation will improve. Syria "was and still supporting dialogue, she proved her seriousness for avoiding any escalation. If there are any weak points in this relation, the reason is maybe the U.S lack of understanding of the nature of the region, or because of Israel which negatively interfere in this relation," al-Shara added.
On his part, the Irish minister stressed his country's adherence to boosting the bilateral relations and the European relations with Syria. He indicated that he conveys a peace message that calls for pushing peace process forward. Cowen called the international sides including U.S.A to provide a negotiating mechanism to solve the current obstacles facing peace process.
He called Israel to implement its commitments vis-a-vis the peace process by halting the violence against Palestinians.
