Dead Sea canal not rival to Suez Canal
Egypt, Economics, 6/26/2003
Egypt's Director of Planning, Research and Studies Department a Suez Canal Authority, Wael Qadoura, said the proposed canal the would link the Red Sea and the Dead Sea by Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority, during the recent Dead Sea World Economic Forum, would not have any effect on the navigation in Suez Canal.
The Canal would be a water pipeline in link the two Seas, he expounded, not a waterway.
"The difference in levels between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea is 41 metres, above that makes navigation in such a water way practically difficult," he added.
Qadoura, who took part in the Dead Sea World Economic Summit, said the main target of the project was to save the Dead Sea and avoid its disappearance by the year 2050 due to the lack of absence of new water supplies.
"The difference in levels between the two seas could be used in power generation," he clarified.
