Omani consumer protection association to be formed

An Omani consumer protection association has been announced. A decision to this effect was issued today by Sheikh Amer bin Shuwain al Hosni, Oman's Minister of Social Development, the official news agency reported.

The report said: The association which is non-governmental is to work to create public awareness among consumers on the quality of commodities and services and ensure foods and medicines are not banned at country of origin for health reasons and areÊ safe for human consumption.

The association is to investigate consumers' complaints and propose adequate solutions to the bodies concerned. It can also seek help from government and private labs to carry out necessary safety tests.

It is to make the consumer aware of the contents of ads and frauds in the market and monitor adherence to approved specifications. The association is also to prepare and publish comparative studies on quality and pricing information of consumer goods and services.

It is also to fight fraud involving selling inferior quality of goods, price manipulation and monopoly and guide consumers in coordination with official bodies.

The association is to issue publications, organize lectures and prepare media programmes to serve its objectives. It may also participate in government and other activities in the interest of the consumer especially regarding preparations of standard specifications, revision of prices and monitoring of all consumer goods.

The association may carry out any other activities that serve its purposes and at the same time comply with the rules and regulations in the Sultanate.

It is the 8th association to be formed by a decision issued by the Minister of Social Development.
