Pentagon denies arresting al-Sahaf
Iraq-USA, Politics, 6/26/2003

The US defense department yesterday denied news reports published by a British daily that the American forces arrested the former Iraqi minister of information Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf.

A spokesman for the Pentagon said " so far we do not have information confirming this matter," while the civil administrator of Iraq Paul Bremer refused to confirm or deny this matter saying "I do not have confirmation on detaining al-Sahaf. Information to this effect will be given by the military at the appropriate time."

Earlier in the day, on Wednesday, the British daily Daily Mirror said quoting "a senior source as the American- British coalition forces" that al-Sahaf was arrested in Baghdad last Monday at a check point installed by the American soldiers while he was driving his car.

The paper added that al-Sahaf begged the American soldiers and the American soldiers permitted him to return back to his house where he was hiding with his wife and three children to take "tooth- brush, shaving instrument and a book."

Washington did not list al-Sahaf's name on the list of the 55 Iraqi most wanted Iraqi figures. The paper said that al-Sahaf's relatives said "he was shocked following the collapse of the regime."
