14 British soldiers killed, injured in southern Britain

Six British soldiers were killed and other 8 wounded after they were exposed to a double attack near al-Amara city to the south of Iraq, in the first incident of the kind since the end of the war in this country.

The spokesman for the British prime minister Tony Blair told journalists that the two incidents took place to the south of al-Amara city, 200 Km to the north of al-Basra which is dominated by the British forces, noting that the killed persons are from the first contingent of the parachutists forces which control this area.

In another clash against another two machineguns patrol of the same contingent were attacked by unidentified persons to the south of al-Amara, where one soldier was wounded and the patrol was destroyed.

The spokesman added that a military helicopter hurried to rescue the patrol and was also attacked upon its landing. Seven of the soldiers on the board of the said plane were wounded, four of them were in critical conditions and are under medical treatment.

He stressed that the British defense office is investigating in the two incidents to know if there is a link between the two incidents and that the prime minister will brief the house of commons on that as soon as possible.

In Baghdad, two Iraqi civilians were wounded when a mortar was dropped at American soldiers near the patrol police center at the southern entrance of Baghdad.

A statement by the occupation forces said that the bomb was thrown on Monday evening at a military car that rolled to an Iraqi sedan car before it exploded.

Meantime, one American soldier was killed and another wounded in a bomb attack against a military caravan, to the south of Baghdad on Sunday, making the number of killed American soldiers 53 since official announcement of the end of the war in May 1st.

In another incident, the US forces supported by helicopters yesterday morning carried out inspection operations in al-Doura quarters to the south of Baghdad and arrested two persons and confiscated weapons.

A spokesman for the army said the inspection operations came following an attempt to crash a car into an American soldier in the area several days before.
