Washington confirms attacking Syrian procession, five Syrian border guards wounded
Syria-USA, Politics, 6/24/2003

The US administration confirmed yesterday that its forces last Wednesday had an attack against a procession of cars believed to have carried remarkable members in the former Iraqi leadership, that might have included Saddam Hussein and his two sons Ode and Qusai.

This however, resulted in killing many passengers and wounding five members of the Syrian border guards who were treated by the US forces inside Iraq.

The American forces did not confirm reports on sending American criminal experts to investigate the identity of the killed persons through applying DNA tests.

American officials said that so far there is no confirmed evidence of the identity of the victims and whether Saddam Hussein and his sons were among them. Vague is still besieging the nature of the attack whose venue or nature was not disclosed.

The American forces, according to information they had from a group of detained Iraqi leaders, attacked the procession near al-Qaim city to the west of Iraq in order to prevent fleeing of members believed to be linked to Saddam Hussein's regime.

A spokesman for the US state department stressed that the attack took place and several Syrians were wounded but he added that the operation might have happened in the Syrian lands. He said "there were many wounded Syrians and we are treating them." On the other hand, the American administration of Iraq had laid the main headline for a plan providing for the foundation of a new Iraqi army. The plan will start next week. The American administration also accepted pressure of sacked Iraqi soldiers to get more compensations.
