Pipeline explosion was an attack, two US soldiers killed, injured in Baghdad

One US soldier was killed and another was injured in an attack by mortars that targeted an American military vehicle to the south of Baghdad.

An American military spokesman said in a statement that the two American soldiers were evacuated from the site of the attack in Khan Azad area, and one of them was wounded.

Meantime, an official at the Iraqi oil ministry said that the large explosion which took place in an oil pipeline near Heit city, north-west Baghdad was a result of a destruction act. The Americans did not accuse any side, but merely said it was a deliberate act.

Meantime, an American official said that Saddam Hussein's International airport which has the name of "Baghdad airport" will be opened within the few coming weeks.

The chairman of the US Agency for International Development Andrew Nantisius told journalists on the sideline of the world economic forum in Jordan that the coming flights from the US and Europe and the Gulf states will be the first flights which will use the airport.

He added that certain difficulties which impede the opening of the airport are being settled, noting the air security and organizing the movement of aviation and embarking on a new law on migration and customs.

By the beginning of June, the US central leadership said that Baghdad's international airport will be re-opened by mid July, but the US administrator of Iraq, Paul Bremer, was less optimistic on this matter.
