Egypt, Politics, 6/21/2003
Judicial sources announced that a court in Cairo issued yesterday strong imprisonment sentences that included imprisonment for two former officials over the case of "al-Naser Metalic" ( Masboukat ), public sector company.
The sources added that the court sentenced "the former chairman of the board of directors of the company, Osama Abdul Wahab, for 18 year imprisonment, besides a charge to pay 154 million Egyptian pounds, while the current president of the company, Salah Abdul Jawad, was sentenced to 15 year imprisonment.
The court also sentenced in absentia the French- Lebanese Fouad Halim Yard and another German to 15 year imprisonment.
The Egyptian attorney had brought the convicted persons to the court, accompanied by other 10 accused of looting 4.1 billion Egyptian pounds ( USD 302 million) between 1992 and March 2002. The case was considered then one of the largest corruption scandals. The trial started on June 17th, 2002. The source continued that the court found other 10 persons not guilty. These include a dead person and an Egyptian journalist who had the post of the media advisor for the company.
Abdul Wahab was accused of transferring to his accounts abroad a sum estimated at 500 million Egyptian pounds ( USD 100 million) at that time that he had looted. He got this sum as a commission for bids he had offered to the Lebanese citizen Yard and to the German, according to the same sources.
These sentences, however can not be appealed, rather be brought to the court of cassation. This comes as Egypt has decided to cancel state security courts.
