Morocco, Peru to Create Parliamentary Friendship Group
Morocco-Peru, Politics, 6/20/2003

Morocco and Peru decided in Rabat on Wednesday to create a parliamentary friendship group.

Speaker of Moroccan House of Advisors, Mustapha Oukacha, and Peruvian external relations minister, Allan Wagner, who is currently in a four-day visit to Morocco, agreed that such a parliamentary group will be an additional tool to promote bilateral cooperation and intensify dialogue between the two counties' legislative branches.

The head of the Peruvian diplomacy underlined that his talks with Moroccan officials reviewed several accords signed between Morocco and Peru to develop and enlarge the scope of bilateral cooperation, especially after the conclusion of accords in trade, investment and fisheries.

For his part, Oukacha said the level of cooperation between the two countries does not reflect the friendship binding the two countries nor the role each of the two countries play at the regional and continental levels.

The Moroccan speaker further expressed the Moroccan parliament's appreciation for Peru's initiative to correct its stand regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue. Peru's withdrawal of its recognition of the so-called "Sahrawi republic" is a crucial step leading to a better understanding of the separatists' plot and the legitimacy of Morocco's fight to perfect its territorial unity, he added.

In this regard, Wagner said his country supports UN efforts for a peaceful solution of the Sahara question that can be settled, he noted, within the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA, mustering Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia).

The Peruvian minister, who arrived here on Tuesday, has signed with Moroccan officials a package of agreements covering various aspects.
