Five operations by Iraqis killed one American; Rumsfeld links Iraq's security to Syria and Iran
Iraq-USA, Military, 6/20/2003

The US defense secretary Ronald Rumsfeld understated the importance of the resistance operations which target the American occupation forces on Iraq. These operations resulted in killing one American soldier and wounding many others in five operations carried out in less than 24 hours.

Rumsfeld noted to external factors that control the coming security situation : like the men who flow from Iran and Syria and the speed during which we will be able to give an Iraqi face for the interim authority.

Replying to a question on the Iraqi resistance operations against the occupation forces, Rumsfeld said: Nobody can accept the killing of military men without sadness. But the Americans have a clear idea about the nature of the 'Iraqi' regime which is responsible for the death of hundreds of thousands of persons and realize how difficult our mission is.

Rumsfeld considered that the resistance against the Americans is not coordinated at the national or regional level and is carried out within groups including between ten to 20 persons at most. Rumsfeld indicated to foreign factors that control the coming security situation in Iraq, doubting once again Syria and Iraq. He said "there are other factors that will decide the situation like the men who come from Iran and Syria and the speed during which we can give an Iraqi face to the interim authority."

Meantime, one American soldier was killed, and two others wounded when an Iraqi resistance shelling targeted an ambulance for the US army to the south of Iraq. The US army said that the ambulance which targeted al-Iskandareyah quarters, southern Baghdad was carrying an American who was injured in a separate incident.

Witnesses said that Iraqi resistance opened a missile at an American military vehicle to the west of Baghdad and it was destroyed completely as a result. The witnesses said that the operation resulted in damages in the lines of the occupation soldiers, but the Iraqi army said that the vehicle was just obstructed and the US soldiers left it for repair before it was targeted by the Iraqis.

In Falouja, eye witnesses said that two attacks took place yesterday and resulted in wounding soldiers. Two anti -tank missiles were fired at an electricity station where the American forces were positioned. The fire resulted in a large explosion in the station and as a result the electricity grid was cut from part of the city. The American forces opened fire at the attackers and pulled out from the position.

Simultaneously, attackers fired an anti- tank missile at a building including an important American position, the soldiers retaliated. There was a fire exchange and fire erupted in an American armored vehicle and in an Iraqi truck.

Three mortars shelling hit outside a center for military and civilian operations in charge of coordinating military and civilian aspects for humanitarian aids of the occupation forces in Sameraa town to the north of Baghdad on Tuesday. This resulted in killing one Iraqi while other 12 were reported wounded, according to a statement by the occupation army.
