Arab- European universities conference in Damascus

The Second Conference of the Arab- European Universities continued in Damascus yesterday its meetings at Damascus University at the Faculty of Medicine.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Higher Education Hassan Reshih and the Chairman of the European Commission to Damascus, Frank Hesske.

Reshih stressed the important role of the universities in finding solutions to social, political and economic problems and in enhancing dialogue among peoples.

He also touched upon the Higher Education system in Syria and the development it is witnessing within the framework of the overall strategy for building the national system for invention and renovation based on developing the human resources.

For his part, Rector of Damascus University Hani Murtada stressed that this meeting contributes to the development of universities and to modernization of societies through the fruitful cooperation between the peoples.

For his part Hesske talked about the European support to the Higher Education system in Syria. The participants asserted the importance of unifying efforts to create dialogue among Mediterranean states.

It is worth mentioning that this conference was organized by an Italian University in Rome in cooperation with Lebanese University in Beirut, Damascus University, Italian Foreign Ministry, Italian Embassy in Beirut, the UN, the European Union and the Italian Ministry of Education and Scientific Research to prepare draft cooperation project between the European and Arab universities.

The European- Arab Universities First Conference was held in Rome last year under the motto "Universities role in establishing cultural unity and scientific and human development in the Mediterranean region."
