Independents win majority of seats in Jordanian elections
Jordan, Politics, 6/18/2003
Preliminary results of the legislative elections announced by the Jordanian ministry of the interior yesterday evening showed that independents close to the authority have won the majority of seats at the new Jordanian parliament.
Those independents who represent the tribes, the main pro- Monarchy families, won the great majority according to preliminary results in more than half of the 45 election circles. According to these results, the Islamists won five seats and the left one seat.
However, the candidates of the Islamic Labor work talked of winning 20 seats. News reports in Amman quoted these candidates saying that their party got results that avail it a strong presence in the next parliament, noting that the party's woman candidate Hayat al-Museimi had a considerable vote in her election circle.
News reports also said that results were not surprising as well-known figures have won, such as former prime minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdah who was re-elected in Northern Irbid province.
The former speaker of the Jordanian parliament Abdul Hadi al-Majali also won for the southern al-Karak city, while the former speaker of the Jordanian parliament Saad Sorour won one of the three seats allocated for the Bedouins of the North.
Meantime, the Jordanian minister of information Muhammad al-Edwan said in a press statement that the Jordanian government will resign after the final announcement about the results of the elections.
The Jordanian minister, on the other hand, rejected accusations raised by the Islamic Labor party to that there was fraud in certain election circles, stressing that the election process was held neutrally and honestly.
