Australia bans Hizbullah party
Lebanon-Australia, Politics, 6/18/2003

Australia's attorney general Daril William has stated that Australia decided to ban the Lebanese Hizbullah Party.

In a statement, Williams said that the Australian parliament decided in a late hour on Monday a draft law that aims in particular at banning the external security organization of the party which the Australian intelligence alleged that it has links to terrorist activities.

Williams added that the sanctions will be imposed retroactively as from June 5th when Hizbullah was officially placed on the list despite the fact that the UN has not considered Hizbullah a terrorist group.

Political analysists said that the sanctions have to do with international politics more than with terrorism, as Hizbullah does not constitute any threat worthy mentioning for Australia.

The director of terrorist studies at Australia's National University Cliff Williams told journalists that the sanctions is most expectedly a result of pressures made by the US against Australia because Hizbullah threatens Israel.
