Mubarak reviews development schemes for higher education
Egypt, Education, 6/17/2003

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak yesterday met with Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr Mofied Shehab as part of following up various different fields of national work and progress in modernization programs in the different ministries.

Emerging from the meeting, Shehab said he gave President Mubarak a detailed report on the implementation of a plan to develop higher education.

Some 25 projects were to be carried out according to the plan, which was ratified in February 2000 in light of securing government funding, grants from the European Union (EU) and Arab funds, and assistance from UNESCO experts.

Shehab told reporters that he presented to the President an evaluation of development projects, which are being carried now.

"President Mubarak gave instructions to secure all technical capabilities and assistance in efforts to enhance the performance and level of university staff and graduates through training," Shehab said.

"The President said that opportunities for higher education must be given to all who need it according to their capabilities and in line with requirements of the labor market.

Shehab said he briefed the President on preliminary indications concerning admissions for the new academic year in relation to last year's results and expectations of student numbers this year, in line with the directives of the Supreme Council of Universities.

He added that he informed the President on what has been achieved in the development of technical colleges in view of the Egyptian leader's interest in higher education so that these colleges become advanced institutes in relation to the state's needs for technical graduates.

"I submitted to the President a scheme to convert all intermediate technical colleges into technological ones," he said, adding that work on the scheme started two months ago and courses will begin next year," he said.

Among the other projects, which the minister presented to the President, were developing university curricula, upgrading education faculties, and the establishment of a centralized system to evaluate performance and quality of education institutes.

Shehab said that President Mubarak agreed to hold a meeting with the Supreme Council of Universities soon to discuss prospects for developing education.
