Mrs. Mubarak announces start of women for peace movement
Egypt-Regional, Culture, 6/17/2003
Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak announced in Geneva Monday the establishment of an international "women for peace movement" under her sponsorship, a Geneva-based non-governmental organization.
The organization would set up branches in several parts of the world, while the HQ of its permanent secretariat would be in Cairo.
Mrs. Mubarak signed earlier in the day the constituent law of the international organization.
A press release issued in Geneva said the "women for peace" movement is devoted to promoting peace and tolerance among world peoples via cooperation and coordination with other international peace-loving NGOs.
"The role of women and their ability to introduce changes at the political, economic and social levels will be highlighted by the new NGO," the statement added.
Mrs. Mubarak, head of the technical consultative committee of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, is to chair the Arab-African conference on the legislation regarding the female circumcision.
The conference is due in Cairo next Saturday and it will last for three days. Meanwhile, there will be a press conference today for briefing on the conference programme and its objective.
