May 16 Attacks: French NGO on solidarity trip to Casablanca
Morocco-France, Culture, 6/17/2003

A delegation of Paris-based NGO "the International Committee of African Renaissance" (CIRA) visited Sunday the sites targeted by the terrorist attacks that rocked Casablanca on May 16 in solidarity with the victims and the Moroccan people.

The delegation of the Paris-based Ngo was made up of political figures, executives, artists and civil society representatives.

During the visit, adviser to king Mohammed VI, Zoulikha Nasri, stressed Moroccans' determination to carry on their march for modernity and their struggle against the obscurantism forces that want to undermine its democracy efforts.

Nasri reaffirmed condemnation of the barbarous attacks, voicing the Moroccan people's attachment to values of tolerance, peace and openness.

Head of the CIRA, Moroccan Maria Maylin, said the visit to the scene of the criminal attacks is for the members of the association an opportunity to express their solidarity and friendship with the Moroccan people, which is known across the world for its generosity and attachment to tolerance and peace.

May 16 tragic events have deeply saddened us and we want, through our presence here, to express our rejection of hatred and to pay tribute to Moroccans' spirit of openness and compassion.

The delegation also visited the Casablanca university hospital to inquire about the conditions of the victims.

The association had already provided several Moroccan hospitals with lung radiology equipment and made grants to orphanages in the south of the country. It will organize surgical missions and supply the hospital of Tata (south) with modern equipment.

The CIRA was created in Paris in 1986 by Maria Maylin with the aim to rehab hospitals in Africa, support poorest patients and train medical teams.
