Saudi authorities continue campaign of arrest in Mecca
Saudi Arabia, Local, 6/17/2003
The Saudi Arabian authorities have arrested more persons described as terrorist elements during breaking in operations launched in the city of Mecca during the 24 past hours.
Saudi press sources said that the four persons arrested were injured during fire exchange with the Saudi security forces.
On the other hand, news reports said that the Saudi authorities arrested 6 persons who were riding a stolen car near the coastal city of Jeddah. The police opened fire at one suspect among them and he was injured as a result after he had threatened to explode a bomb.
The reports said that the suspected persons were planning to launch a large attack inside Saudi Arabia, while the Saudi authorities did not deny nor confirm this information. The acts of arrest came just one day after the attack carried out by the Saudi security forces against a house in Mecca last Saturday that resulted in killing seven persons including security men.
The Saudi daily Okaz said that an intensive exchange of fire took place after the security forces broke into a residential building in al-Khaledeyah quarters. The paper added that the security men found in the house large amounts of explosives and weapons more than the amount found in Riyadh.
The Saudi authorities have been chasing several suspects in the context of investigations into the Riyadh explosions which took place in mid May and resulted in killing and wounding scores.
