Missile attack against the Lebanese TV station
Lebanon, Local, 6/16/2003
News reports in Beirut said that unidentified persons fired two missiles at the "news center building" of the Lebanese al-Mustaqbal ( future) TV owned by the Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri.
The incident resulted into burning one studio and several halls in the building, but no human casualties were reported. The station explained that the two missiles of 107 mm caliber penetrated the outer wall and exploded inside the main studio and resulting in heavy losses in equipment.
The Lebanese security forces cordoned the building and started to make investigations into the incident. Preliminary investigations indicated that the launching of the two missiles was made by a timing instrument from a car carrying a false plate and was parked in front of the news building in al-Rawsheh area in the capital Beirut.
The Lebanese information minister Michael Smaha denounced the attack. He said upon inspecting the site the operation "is a message which is addressed not only to the TV ( Future) rather for security and stability in Lebanon." The executive director of al-Mustaqbal TV, Ali Jaber, said that the station did not receive any threats before this attack. He said in a press statement that he cannot accuse anyone of the purpose behind this attack.
