Asharq Al-Awsat: Issues of common concern tops Moroccan-Algerian talks in Algiers, Moroccan fm
Algeria-Morocco, Politics, 6/14/2003
Moroccan Minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, said Friday meetings he will hold during his visit on Saturday to Algiers will discuss questions of common concern.
Benaissa told the London-based "Asharq Al-Awsat" daily the meeting will probe questions related to the Maghreb, the Islamic world, the situation in Africa and cooperation between Rabat and Algiers as countries that concluded association accords with the European Union.
Benaissa added that his meeting Algerian peer, Abdelaziz Belkhadem, will be "brotherly" and part of other encounters between high officials of the two countries.
The Moroccan official voiced hope to see differences between the two states settled to pave the way for the consolidation of bilateral relations in all realms which will naturally profit to the Maghreb Arab Union (UMA, mustering Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia) and reactivate its structures.
Algeria and Morocco can play active roles in foster cooperation among African countries, he said, recalling King Mohammed VI's interest in South-South cooperation particularly with African countries.
In the same vein, Benaissa expressed hope to see Algeria and Morocco working side by side to support NEPAD (the new partnership for Africa's development).
