Iraqi ambassador in Amman refuses to return back home
Jordan-Iraq, Politics, 6/14/2003

The Iraqi ambassador in Jordan Sabah Yassin, and the press officers at the Iraqi embassy in Amman rejected instructions to return back to their country and decided to stay in Jordan.

An Iraqi diplomat in Amman said that Yassin who comes from Takrit, the birthplace of Saddam Hussein, stopped coming to work since last Tuesday.

Earlier, Yassin said he will return back to Iraq to visit his family and the headquarters of the foreign ministry, but he gave up his intention later and said he prefers to stay in Amman "for the time being." The Iraqi diplomat said that the press officer at the Iraqi embassy Jawad al-Ali, stopped coming to the embassy. He said that Yassin and al-Ali might ask for political asylum in Jordan.
