Mubarak calls for halting the Israeli aggression, criticizes al-Ranteisi assassination attempt
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 6/12/2003

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has criticized "Israel's attempt" to assassinate Abdul Aziz al-Ranteisi, one of the leaders of Hamas, warning against the danger of the continued Israeli aggression against the Palestinians and its reflections on efforts aiming to revive the peace process.

In a joint press conference held yesterday with the Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi following their talks in Cairo, Mubarak called on Israel to halt its aggression against the Palestinian people. He stressed that the current conditions are "as if there is no Roadmap."

Mubarak called on the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon to help the prime minister of the Palestinian authority Mahmoud Abbas to achieve security and stability.

President Mubarak also called for the mobilization of the American and European efforts to revive the peace process, noting that peace is a precious objective that we should not lose hope to achieve, rather exert all possible efforts to reach it.

Mubarak indicated he had sent an envoy ( Omar Suleiman) to hold talks with the Palestinian and Israeli sides concerning the current conditions.

On the other hand, Berlusconi said that his country is concerned with the Middle East peace process, noting that his country will work during its future presidency of the European Union to support the Roadmap, because it will be a member in the Quartet ( including the EU, The UN, Russia and the US.).
