Egyptian efforts to convince the Palestinians of a truce
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 6/12/2003
The director of the Egyptian intelligence Omar Suleiman has started his talks with the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in Ramallah before his meeting with the prime minister Mahmoud Abbas.
Diplomatic sources in Cairo said that it was due that Suleiman will meet also with leaders of several Palestinian movements but this has become unpractical because of many changes, including Israel's attempt to assassinate the key prominent figure in the Islamic resistance movement Hamas.
These sources added that Suleiman carries to the Palestinian leadership a proposal to declare a six-months truce, where the US and Egypt supervise the commitment of the Palestinians and the Israelis to it.
In case these efforts will succeed and a progress is attained, Egypt will send a security delegation to the Palestinian territories and the US administration will hurry to sending John Wolf which was appointed to supervise the implementation of the security side of the Roadmap plan.
On the other hand, the Jordanian minister of information Nabil Amre rejected the calls of the Islamic Jihad movement and the people's front for the liberation of Palestine for the prime minister Mahmoud Abbas to resign from his post, following the failed Israeli attempt to assassinate Abdul Aziz al-Ranteisi, saying that the Palestinian legislative council is the decision- maker in this regard.
