King Mohammed chairs ministers council

Morocco's King Mohammed VI chaired this Monday at the royal palace of Agadir a ministers council that approved a series of draft-decrees, including one on promotion of the situation of women and children rights, a draft-decree providing for increases in allowances of security staff and local councils employees and draft-decrees on the schedule of elections.

Official spokesman for the Royal Palace, Hassan Aourid, said in a statement the council approved a bill on the promotion of women status and children rights, in line with the sovereign's orientations that stress the need to integrate women in development, improve their economic, social and legal status and preserve their dignity. The bill also seeks to preserve and develop children personality in an atmosphere of sound education that shields them against all forms of ill-treatment and exploitation, in order to build a democratic civil society and adapt the Moroccan penal law to international conventions signed by Morocco.

The Council further adopted decree-projects on the system of allowances granted to the police, civil rescue, auxiliary forces and local councils staff. The decrees provides for increases in some allowances paid to these employees and adjusts minimum salaries to the SMIG (guaranteed minimum salaries). The increase will be enforced with validity starting on January 1st, 2003.

Other draft-decrees adopted by the ministers council deal with the listing of professional chambers, the number of their seats, their territorial competence and delimiting their electoral constituencies, pertinent decrees and decrees on the coming elections timetable.

Under this timetable, professional chambers will be elected on July 25, communal elections will be held on September 12, wage-earners representatives will be chosen from September 10 through 19 while prefectoral and provincial assemblies will be elected on September 24 and elections of regional councils will take place on October 24.
