Kuwait, Politics, 6/10/2003

The Islamic constitutional movement, the major Kuwaiti Islamic group, has called for drawing a new legal system based on the jurisprudence of the Islamic Sharia and advocated that on top of its electoral program goals

The Kuwaiti dailies which published the movement's election programs and said that the movement announced officially the beginning of its elections campaign on Sunday evening and declared a list of 15 candidates to launch the elections in July to choose members of the Kuwaiti nation's council ( the parliament ) which includes 50 seats.

The Kuwaiti judicial system is based on "secular principles," but the courts are based to the Islamic Sharia rules in issuing sentences in certain matters.

The program of the Islamic constitutional movement also includes the call for reforms in the constitutional establishments and changing the teaching curricula to comply with the Islamic teachings.

Meantime, chief editor of the Kuwaiti daily al-Watan, Muhammad al-Jasem, was brought yesterday before the public court in line with a notification sent to him on Sunday. Al-Jasem was summoned because he had criticized, during a political meeting of the candidate for parliament Jasem al-Omar on Saturday evening, the the government and the ruling family in Kuwait accusing them of interfering in the election operations, though financing candidates they want to win the elections.

A source explained that summoning on al-Jasem came because he is a citizen who talked in a general public, rather than as a paper's chief editor.
