Two American soldiers were killed in attacks in al-Faloujam al-Qaem
Iraq-USA, Politics, 6/10/2003

News reports in Iraq quoted eye witnesses as saying that one American soldier was killed when an American armored vehicle was exposed to anti armored vehicles shelling on Sunday evening near al-Rafeydeen bank in the downtown of al-Falouja town to the west of Baghdad.

The witnesses added the armored vehicle was destroyed and the American occupation forces started large scale inspection and breaking in operations in the city under support of a military helicopter.

In a statement, the US central leadership admitted that its soldiers in al-Falouja, 70 Km from the Iraqi capital were exposed to an attack on Sunday evening but indicated no casualties occurred.

The statement explained that the soldiers did not respond to the fire but were able to arrest Iraqis suspected to be the launchers of fire at the American soldiers. The attack came after the killing of one American soldier and Iraqi citizens during the two past days in the tense city which has been witnesses repeated attacks between armed Iraqis and the American soldiers.

In another attack that took place to the west of al-Qaem city which is close to the Syrian borders, one American soldier was killed by bullets of armed Iraqis at a check point for the American forces. The American soldiers retaliated the fire and killed one attacker and arrested another.

In a statement, the US army said that several attackers arrived at the inspection point on Sunday late evening in a car and pretended they need urgent medical care and opened fire at the soldier and he was killed as a result.

The statement which was issued by the US army yesterday said that at least one attacker was able to flee from inside the car and operations started in search of attackers and the suspected car. An investigation was opened to that effect.

Worthy mentioning that 29 American soldiers were killed in attacks or incidents since the US President George W. Bush announced the end of military operations in Iraq on May 1st.

Meantime, the American and British forces admitted that the first week of the process of collecting weapons from the Iraqi citizens ended with a "weak" outcome.

A statement by the American- British coalition said on Sunday that the Iraqis who at least own five million piece of weapons, surrendered to the police centers in various parts of the country during 7 days 39 pistols, 65 semi guns, 220 automatic guns, 10 machine guns, 58 anti tank shells and 79 mortars and explosives.
