Opening inter-Maghreb borders would boost confidence in the future
Maghreb, Politics, 6/7/2003
Opening borders between Maghreb countries would "boost confidence in the future," said Lecturer Ghile Francis from Granada's Management School.
If borders were open from Mauritania to Libya, this would boost Maghrebans, Europeans and investors' confidence in the future, Ghiles, who is also member of the Mediterranean Institute's Scientific Committee, told Morocco's second TV channel 2M Thursday.
I think it is in Brussels that decisions are made. If Maghreb countries go there united, they would weigh more, with an 80 million inhabitant market, than if they go individually. They had rather have one voice in Brussels, Paris, London and Rome, he insisted.
Opening inter-Mahgreb borders would also enable populations develop their economic ties and carry out job-creating joint projects, he said.
On Morocco-Spain relations, Ghile said the two countries are "almost doomed to understanding," and that they had better seek positive reasons to achieve that.
Touching on immigration in Spain, Ghiles said the Iberian country is pretty novice in the field, unlike England or France, which have acquired experience in how to develop relations with immigrants throughout the years.
I also think Spain forgets how Spanish immigrants brought lots of money to the country in hard times, he said. "It now refuses to have legal Maghreban immigrants on its soil, depriving the Maghreb from valuable incomes.
