Iraqi resistance continues, Bremer prepares to meet Iraqi leaderships
Iraq-USA, Politics, 6/7/2003
The American forces in Iraq were exposed to new attacks by unidentified attackers that targeted a patrol near a military air base to the west of the capital Baghdad by missiles and gun machines.
A military spokesman said that the US soldiers retaliated but no one of the two sides were hit in the attack which targeted a military tank and armored vehicle. The spokesman said that damages were inflected in the armed vehicles.
The attack which took place in al-Khaledeyah area, 70 Km to the west of Baghdad, is considered the most recent in the series of attacks against the American forces in the heart of Baghdad, where scores of American soldiers were killed or wounded.
In another incident, the US army said in a statement that four Iraqis were wounded after one American soldier opened his gun fire at them unintentionally.
Meantime, great tension is prevailing the governorate of al-Anbar to the west of Iraq which warns of a more violent confrontation between the American forces and citizens, especially in the city of al-Fallouja, known for being a premises for the conservative Islamist trend.
Confrontations escalated in the city on Thursday as one American soldier was killed and other five were wounded, where four explosions were reported in the buildings of al-Anbar University which the American forces take as a headquarters in al-Ramadi city.
Meantime, the US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld said that Ali Hassan al-Majid, the cousin of the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, might be still alive, despite the fact that American and British officials said earlier they believe he was killed in the attack of April, 5th.
It is however, decided that the American administrator of Iraq, Paul Bremer, will meet with a vast group of political formations in order to have plenary dialogue about an interim administration in Iraq that is not limited to the council of the former 7- opposition members.
A spokesman for Bremer's office said that the meeting will include a vast group of political formations out of the 7-member council. He added that representatives for minorities and spiritual and tribal leaders will attend the meeting.
During a meeting with the 7-member council, Bremer announced last Sunday the cancellation of the idea of the national conference promised by his predecessor Jay Garner with the aim of forming an interim administration, justifying his decision to the opposition of other Iraqi groups.
He said he will work for forming a political council including 25 to 30 members that will lead an interim administration.
