Human rights body chair calls for vigilance to avoid abuses in fighting terrorism
Morocco, Politics, 6/6/2003
Chairman of the Moroccan human rights advisory council (CCDH), Omar Azziman, said vigilance should be observed in the fight against terrorism in order to avoid abuses however serious the crimes are.
The CCDH chairman conceded, in an interview published this Thursday by "Al Ittihad Al-Ishtiraki" daily that the equation is difficult to handle, adding that while terrorism jeopardizes human rights, fighting the scourge should not affect these rights.
For Azziman, the causes of terrorism are numerous, inter-twined or even contradictory, and only an objective and deep study would help identify the true causes of the phenomenon and a prevention policy. He further argued that terrorism is the result of the junction of several factors.
Following last May 16 terrorist attacks in Casablanca, he said the CCDH has set up a commission to look into causes of terrorism and legal, social, cultural and educational means to fight the scourge.
