Moussa denies Sharm Esh Sheikh, al-Aqaba summit targets resistance
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 6/6/2003
The secretary general of the Arab League AL Amr Moussa has considered meetings of the summit took place in the region concerning the Palestinian issue as a chance through which hopes can be achieved for both the Palestinians and the Israelis through the Roadmap.
He stressed the need of following up the implementation of the Roadmap and giving full opportunity and positive spirit to implementing it following Sharm esh Sheikh and al-Aqaba summits.
On the Iraqi file, Moussa said that the AL is in closer contact with all sides inside Iraq. He stressed the need of developing the situation quickly after the issuance of the UN Security Council resolution which talked about occupation in Iraq, through establishing an Iraqi government as soon as possible. "And as Arabs we can cooperate in this field." Moussa noted that in his contact with the representative of the UN secretary general in Iraq, it was agreed to cooperate between the two sides to implement the recent UN resolutions in Iraq.
Moussa denied readings and views which considered Sharm esh Sheikh and al-Aqaba as aiming to "dismantle the Palestinian resistance." He added "I do not think so. Because terrorism is a bad act and we know the position of the Arab states concerning it. No body will support the terrorism we saw in Riyadh and Casablanca," according to Moussa in statements he made on Thursday to the press.
About the Israeli proposal on a "Jewish state," adopted by the US President George W. Bush in his statement before al-Aqaba summit, Moussa said that talking about a "Jewish state" is not simple and "can not be conceived as that simple." Moussa reiterated the commitment of the Arab League to international resolutions and to the Arab initiative proposed at Beirut's summit. He stressed the need of negotiating in the question of Palestinia refugees according to UN resolution 194.
On whether he had received contacts from countries that took part in the Sharm esh Sheikh and al-Aqaba summit, Moussa said he had received a telephone call from the Palestinian foreign minister Nabil Shaath, noting that the "Arab follow up and move committee" will be meeting in Manama, Bahrain, next week and will listen to a complete and detailed report on that issue.
