US soldier was killed
Iraq-USA, Politics, 6/4/2003
A US military spokesman has admitted that an American female soldier was killed yesterday at dawn to the north of Baghdad as she was shot in a recent series of attacks against the American forces in Iraq during the few past days.
An American military source said that the soldier was exposed to fire while she was in a military patrol yesterday early morning.
Worth mentioning that the American forces had been exposed to a series of attacks in the downtown of Baghdad since the end of the war against Iraq two months before, and resulted in killing or wounding scores of American troops.
Eye- witnesses indicated earlier to the killing of one female soldier and wounding of another male soldier by the fire of an Iraqi sniper in al-Ramadi city to the west of Baghdad. However, it is not known yet if it is the same operation with a mistake in the name of the city, or if it is different operation.
At least three Iraqi civilians were killed and unknown number of civilians were wounded including children after the American soldiers opened fire during a demonstration against the American presence in the city of al-Ramadi, organized in front of the governorate's headquarters.
Some demonstrators raised pictures for the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and chanted slogans supporting him. They called for the evacuation of the American forces and this provoked the occupation soldiers to open fire at them indiscriminately and to use tear gas to disperse them.
On the other hand, the former US defense official Thomas White said that it is time for the Pentagon to admit that the American army will stay for a long time in Iraq and this requires the deployment of a large force.
In an interview with the US daily USA Today issued yesterday, White said that high ranking officials in the Pentagon "do not want to understand the volume of the US obligations in the post-Iraq war.
He added "the matter is that they are people who do not want to admit to the nation that we will stay there for a long time." The paper said that the defense department has 150,000 troops in Iraq and announced recently that the third army contingent will stay there for an unlimited time.
