Conference about Democracy opened in Beirut
Regional-Lebanon, Politics, 6/3/2003

Activities of the International conference on democracy and peace, organized by the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, opened in Beirut on Monday.

In his speech at the opening ceremonies, Lebanese Culture Minister, Ghazi Al-Aridi pointed out that Israel who claims democracy is practicing the ugliest kinds of oppression and inhuman practices against the Palestinian civilians.

For his part, Chairman of the International Committee about democracy and development, Butros Butros Ghali, spoke of the necessity of instilling the democratic principles inside the United Nations and the participation of non-governmental sides in forming norms and resolutions pertaining to the future of the globe.

The two-day conference will discuss issues of democracy, protection from conflicts, democracy during conflict times in addition to democracy after conflict.
