Al-Assad confers with US congress member
Syria-USA, Politics, 6/2/2003

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad received yesterday a delegation from the US Congress headed by Congressman Darrel Issa.

Talks during the meeting dealt with the peace process in the region and the situation in Iraq, stressing Syria's role in the future events and in achieving just and comprehensive peace.

President al-Assad stressed Syria's care for ending the Iraqi people's suffering and the state of chaos prevailing in Iraq asserting Iraqi people's right to elect their government.

Concerning the peace process, al-Assad underlined Syria's commitment to Madrid term of reference and the Security Council resolutions in order to achieve just and comprehensive peace.

Al-Assad also asserted that if peace is not just and comprehensive it wont last for a long time indicating that reality has proved the correctness of the Syrian vision.

Later on, President al-Assad received a delegation of the Middle East churches.

At the beginning, President al-Assad highly appreciated the noble mission of the delegation aiming at putting an end for the Palestinian and the Iraqi peoples' sufferings and at realizing peace and stability in the region.

The delegation briefed President Assad on the activities of the Churches' Council in the region.

Talks also dealt with the clergymen's concern over the situation in Iraq calling for the return of the normal life there as soon as possible.
