OIC secretary general stresses importance of political will for future of Islamic nation
Regional, Politics, 5/31/2003

The Islamic nation development depends on the existence of a genuine political will and a general consensus on unity in order to set realistic objectives, said Abdelouahed Belkziz, secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

Talking to the OIC foreign ministers meeting in Tehran this May 28-30, the OIC secretary general called the Islamic world to take an active part in international encounters and endeavor on all fronts to influence the course of events and defend its interests and causes.

For the OIC chief, the setbacks suffered by the Islamic nation are the result of a set of accumulated failures, blaming the Islamic world for some of them.

The Islamic world has to follow closely attempts to establish a new strategic order in the Middle East, resulting from the pangs of the Iraqi crisis, he called before extending the needed backing to Palestinians to enable them recover their national rights. He also stressed that efforts must be made to avoid that the Road Map be altered or that it be affected by obstacles or pre-conditions.

Of the issue of Kashmir, he said the pan-Islamic organization supports the Security Council's settlement project, voicing optimism on the recent detente in relations between India and Pakistan. He further hoped that this new development will mark the beginning of a solution that will set the example for other conflicts in the Islamic world, mainly in Chechenya, Azerbaidjan and Myanmar.

For the OIC, the recent terrorist attacks in Bali (Indonesia), Riyadh and Casablanca have tarnished the image of Islam and Muslims and require the enforcement of more efficient measures to remedy the situation and adopt new approaches to settle the problem.

The OIC secretary general appealed to the Islamic world to take the needed measures to build an economic grouping like the existing powerful economic groups.
