ISESCO calls for action to preserve Iraq's civilization
Regional-Iraq, Culture, 5/31/2003

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO, a Rabat-based offshoot of the OIC) called Islamic foreign ministers meeting in Teheran this May 28-30 to identify appropriate measures to preserve the legacy of Islamic civilization and other civilizations in Iraq.

ISESCO director-general told participants the priceless legacy, historic cities and monuments are the property of the entire humankind. He also deplored the traumas experienced by Iraqis as a result of the continuing occupation at a time their cities, monuments and wealth are being looted and destroyed.

"While the Islamic world is today going through a dangerous stage in its history owing to several factors, including the intensification of terrorism that undermines the Muslim societies' values, the situation should not distract public opinion from crucial issues, on top of them socio-economic development issues," he stressed.

Al Twaijri urged for continuous action to restore the image of Islam and of Muslims and highlight the pioneer role the Islamic world plays on the international scene. He also called Muslims to fulfill their mission in fostering unity.

Consequently, he rejected any attempt to make the whole Islamic nation pay for the effects of immature political calculations.
