Washington freezes assets of al-Aqsa society
Palestine-USA, Politics, 5/31/2003
The US on Thursday evening announced freezing assets of al-Aqsa society which is suspected by the American authorities of financing the Hamas movement.
The US treasury department considered al-Aqsa society as "a fully terrorist entity" in order to justify freezing its assets in the USA and prevented American citizens and banks from finalizing any deal with this society.
The US Treasury secretary John Snow said in a statement that this measure will " prevent the terrorist Hamas movement from a vital source for funding and closure of an extra channel to financing terrorism."
Al-Aqsa society is a charity organization for helping widows and orphans and is linked to the Islamic movement run by the Palestinians of 1948. On May 13, Israel detained 13 Arab members of the Islamic movement on charges of money laundering in favor of Hamas. In a statement the British finance ministry of Thursday asked financial establishments in the country to freeze the assets of al-Aqsa society.
