Egypt-USA, Politics, 5/31/2003
The Egyptian foreign minister Ahmed Maher announced yesterday that Egypt expects the two summits of Sharm Esh Sheikh in Egypt and al-Aqaba in Jordan to result in "a positive move" towards peace in the Middle East.
Maher told journalists replying to questions on expected results from the two summits in which the US President George W. Bush will take part "I expect a positive and effective move to take place towards peace and stability in the region." Maher was talking in conclusion of a meeting between President Hosni Mubarak and US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs William Joseph Burns. The talks dealt with preparations for the summit which will be held on June 3 in Egypt, that will bring together the Palestinian prime minister, the Saudi Crown Prince, and the kings of Morocco, Jordan, and Bahrain.
In the second day of this summit, the US President will hold another summit in al-Aqaba to the south of Jordan with Palestinian and Israeli prime ministers and the Jordanian king. Maher said that President Bush's two summits in the region are sure evidence that President Bush is serious in working with the leaders of the region in order to reach a peaceful settlement.
On the other hand, President Mubarak's political advisor Osama al-Baz said "so far we can not say that there is a fundamental change in the American policy towards the Middle East, but they are always trying and stressing care to achieve stability in the region and help in the peace process."
Burns made no statements in conclusion of the meeting which was attended by Maher and al-Baz.
The Egyptian president discussed with the American envoy William Burns preparations for the summit which will bring together Bush with Arab leaders on June 3rd at Sharm Esh Sheikh resort to the east of Egypt.
