Regional, Politics, 5/30/2003

A well-informed source at the Arab League said yesterday that a committee representing Arab senior political and legal figures will hold its first meeting on June 15 and 16 at the AL headquarters in Cairo in order to discuss proposals of the AL member states on developing joint Arab work.

The source said that the "task of this committee which will work continuously for 6 months is to crystallize formula for ideas proposed by the Arab states on boosting the common Arab work system."

The source explained that the "committee will submit results of its meetings to the council of the Arab League at the level of representatives and then to be submitted to the Arab foreign ministers in order to submit a final report on the development operation to the Arab summit which will be held in Tunisia next March."

The source said that the AL received thoughts from Libya, Sudan, Qatar on amending the AL charter and the mechanism of joint work. The AL will also receive other suggestions from other states through official channels.
