Moroccan POWs' plight in tindouf camps examined in Stockholm
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 5/29/2003
The Association for the Defence of Saharan Refugees (ADESETI), held on Monday in Stockholm in collaboration with Swedish NGOs, a conference to unveil the unbearable living conditions of Moroccan POWs sequestered in the Tindouf camp (south-western Algeria).
During the encounter, the representative of the International Red Cross in Geneva, Ms Asa Malde, called for the release of all Moroccan POWs detained in Tindouf camps, some of them for them for more than a quarter of a century.
This encounter, where Swedish MPs and delegates from Swedish NGOs were taking part, ADESETI's chairman and Secretary General respectively Hamid Boussaid and Einar Gaasvik presented the participants with the ADESETI's activities which seek to defend the rights of Saharan refugees and demanded the immediate release of Moroccan POWs.
ADESETI's spokesperson, Yahia Lamine, denounced on his part the humanitarian plight endured by these refugees, "who are deprived of the right to return to their country of origin, Morocco."
He expressed hope to see the international community's efforts bear fruits and the plan of the United Nations' Personal Envoy for the Sahara, James Baker, implemented "so that all Saharan families be gathered in a united Morocco."
A former POW of the Polisario secessionist movement, Hossein Boeda, told participants to this encounter of the hardships he had experienced during six years in the Tindouf camps.
