Egypt: shortage in water resources
Egypt, Economics, 5/29/2003
The Egyptian minister of irrigation and water resources has warned that there is a great shortage in the amounts of water coming to Egypt because of the low floods this year.
In a statement to the Egyptian daily al-Ahali issued yesterday, Abu Zeid added that all indicators show that this shortage will continue for several years to come. A matter which is dangerous on the agricultural lands especially newly reclaimed areas in Sinai and Toshka.
Minister Abu Zeid urged the peasants to decrease the plantation of water- consuming agricultural crops especially rice. Worthy mentioning that Rice is considered the most water consuming crop as an area of one Faddan needs 10-12, 000 cubic meters of waters annually.
