A new quake in Algeria: three killed, 187 wounded
Algeria, Local, 5/28/2003

A new earthquake took place yesterday in Algeria at 5.8 degree at the Richter Scale, and resulted in killing three persons and wounding other 187. This was the echo of the destructive quake which hit Algeria last Wednesday where the Algerians are still counting the human and material losses.

The Algerian deputy minister of the interior Muhammad Qindil told the Algerian TV that the casualties were a result of fears as the three killed persons were buried under the ruins of a 150 floor building which collapsed completely in Raghaya town while they were searching for their belongings in their houses.

The police said in Simouri town in Bumerdas province yesterday evening that "buildings collapsed in the town which is situated to the East of Algeria, where the heaviest casualties occured as a result of last week's quake."

The most recent official announcement on the victims of Wednesday's quake which was at 6.7 degree on the Richter Scale said that 2218 persons were killed and 9497 wounded.

Estimates announced by the chairman of the Algerian Red Crescent Society, Abdul Qader Bukharoufa, in Geneva said yesterday that almost 100,000 Algerians are staying out of their houses in Algeria following the quake for fears of aftershocks and "it seemed they are correct."
