Sudan, Politics, 5/28/2003
Officials in the Sudanese opposition said that two main opposition movements voiced support for the provisional peace agreements between the Sudanese government and the rebels of southern Sudan, thereby giving up their previous reservations.
Those officials said that leader of Umma party and the chairman of the democratic federation party Muhammad Othman al-Meirghani and John Garang the leader of the Sudan People Liberation Army who hold talks with the government agreed to work together to end the Sudanese civil war which has been continuous since 20 years.
The officials explained that the three leaders reached the agreement in talks held in Cairo by the beginning of the week. Al-Mahdi assistant, Abbas al-Faqih said that Cairo's meeting "aims to assure the peace process and support Mashakos talks and to discuss means of working together for the sake of democracy and peace in Sudan."
The government and the rebels agreed in Mashakos, Kenya in 2002 to cancel the application of the Islamic Sharia in areas inhabited by non - Muslims, to organize a referendum in the south over separation following a provisional period of 6 years. However, difficult issues like sharing the authority and resources in the oil rich country are still unsolved. The two sides explained they support Sudan's unity.
On the other hand, the rebels of the liberation of Sudan, who take Darfour as a headquarters, to the west of the country accused the Sudanese army of carrying out bloody air bombardment.
The secretary general of the Sudan's liberation movement Mani Menawi announced that the government army carried out air bombardment operations which targeted villages and a camp for the movement to the west of Kutom city in North Darfour state, whose capital is al-Fasher. He said that the raids took place on Saturday and Sunday and resulted in several wounding and prisoners "and six killings in the lines of the Sudan's liberation army."
