Al-Ahram: Nasrullah: Saddam's regime lost opportunities for the Arab nation by its wars
Lebanon-Iraq, Politics, 5/26/2003
The leader of the Lebanese Hizbullah party said yesterday that Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq "had caused loss of numerous opportunities for the Arab and Islamic nation by the war he launched against Iran, his invasion of Iraq and in oppressing his people."
He explained in an interview with the Egyptian al-Ahram that the toppled Iraqi regime was not only "an oppressive regime but also a dictator," considering that what has been announced of the regime's killings of hundreds thousands of Iraqis and the mass graves, killing women and children were all not surprising for Hizbullah. He stressed "nothing in the history of Saddam Hussein can be defended."
Similarly, Nasrullah condemned the explosions that took place against Riyadh and Casablanca, noting that his party, principally does not agree with this sort of operations which target innocents. He added "so far we do not understand who is behind these attacks," considering that defining the identity of the sides which carried out these operations is important and helps to analyze and understand the backgrounds.
He explained that the US and following September 11 made contacts with the Hizbullah party through mediators for cooperation and proposed to the party to give up resistance and to collaborate with it in exchange for removing its name from the US terrorism list and to forget all problems of the past.
He added that Washington also proposed in this regard providing economic aid to Hizbullah and certain Lebanese areas and to politically recognize Hizbullah party and help it to play a basic role, noting that his party rejected all that.
