Bremer disarms Chalabi's forces
Iraq-USA, Politics, 5/26/2003
The US administrator of Iraq, Paul Bremer, yesterday took the first step towards ending the role of Ahmed Chalabi, the chairman of the Iraqi National Congress, who allies with the US defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and wins his full support.
Bremer's step was reflected in disarming the 700 armed men Chalabi brought back from abroad to the Iraqi territories under the name of the free army of Iraq, deciding to form the nucleus of an army.
One observer described the political opposition who returned to Iraq and their accompanying forces as a guarding militias and terrorism -- in being similar to sniffers of mines who precede the men who dismantle landmines -- when their role expires later.
Chalabi returned back to Iraq during the first week of the recent war in Iraq. He headed for Baghdad after one week of its collapse having the "shooting club" as a headquarters for his party and guards. However, Chalabi's glimpse of hope started to diminish when the US Department Of State appointed the diplomat Paul Bremer to replace Gen. Jay Garner, who was appointed by the defense department. British sources said yesterday that Garner was dismissed because of his ultimate failure in Iraq.
On Sunday a politician in Baghdad said that the American forces which control Baghdad dismantled the weapons of the militia linked to Chalabi..
The politician said that solving Chalabi's militias and disarming them fall in the course of Bremer's campaign to impose law and order in Iraq.
Chalabi's spokesman, Intiqad Qanbar, who returned back recently to Baghdad said that the army desolved the militia of the free Iraq forces. This militias which includes 700 fighters armed with rifles and missile, was working under the American leadership.
