Mubarak meets Qathafi on Libya's withdrawal request from the Arab League
Libya-Egypt, Politics, 5/26/2003

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak has announced that Libya's Leader of the Revolution Colonel Muammar al Qathafi has approved freezing the Libyan request to withdraw from the Arab League and to work for reforming and dealing with differences at this level.

The statements of the Egyptian president to the press in Tripoli, came following talks he had held with the Libyan leader which he held in conclusion of his surprising visit yesterday ( Sunday) to Libya, in which Mubarak stressed that the Libyan leader froze the request of his country's withdrawal from the Arab League," in order to preserve the unity of the Arab entity in this critical phase the Arab nation is passing," noting that all visions relating to the development of the common Arab work system and the Arab League will be debated in the first Arab summit meeting to the leaders so as to take the appropriate decision concerning it.

Earlier, Qathafi stressed that Libya will not give up its decision to withdraw from the Arab League unless the AL charter is revitalized "in a way to ensure the efficiency of the common Arab efforts."

Mubarak was quoted as saying "we have agreed on that because it is not in the interests of the Arabs to have any of them out of the Arab League." He explained that there is no difference between the Egyptian and Libyan sides to revitalize the common Arab work, and that preparations are underway to amend the charter of the Arab League and that this will be debated to the Arab League in an Arab summit. Qathafi who proposed the issue of amending the charter approved of this.

In October, 2002, Libya announced withdrawal from the Arab League in protest of the absence of the Arab initiatives in confrontation of crises of the region, especially in the Palestinian and Iraqi files.
