Joint, bilateral meetings for Sudanese opposition in Cairo for coordination
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 5/24/2003

The first meetings between opposition Sudanese leaderships started yesterday in Cairo, announced during the two past days. The meeting included al-Sadeq al-Mahdi the chairman of the Umma party and the chairman of the rebel movement John Garang.

The two sides discussed the dimensions of the current developments in the context of the peace process in Sudan and the requirement of the next phase of coordination and unity of vision among opposition sides in challenge of the government in order to establish just and comprehensive peace and founding a multilateral and democratic system that guarantees the unity of the homeland and its stability.

Well-informed source at the Umma party said that the agenda of the meeting will be open dealing with all dimensions of the case, the stances of the two sides and the vision of each side for the coming phase, and to maintain an agreement on the mechanism for continued coordination and consultations between the two sides.

The same sources said that al-Mahdi will meet today with the chairman of the opposition Sudanese coalition, the leader of the democratic federal party Muhammad Osman al-Meirghani to maintain consultations on developments at the Sudanese political arena, and further coordination between the Sudanese opposition coalition, on the one hand and the federal party on the other with the Umma party especially, as the latter had dispatched a special delegation to Nairobi to coordinate with the 6- member coalition delegation over debated issues in the negotiations and to agree on a common vision as an opposition force.

On the other hand, well-informed sources in Cairo stressed that Egypt is making serious efforts to convene a tripartite meeting including al-Meirghani, al-Mahdi and Garang. Although al-Meirghani denied in a press meeting any information on arrangements to convene a tripartite meeting and said he will meet each of them separately, however, the sources confirmed that arrangements have actually started to convene this meeting which is expected on Sunday.
