Syria approved UN security council resolution on lifting Iraq sanctions
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 5/24/2003
Following the voting at the UN Security Council on the draft-resolution regarding Iraq on Thursday, and in view of the impossibility of Syria's participation in the voting because the consultations were not completed on the contents of the draft-resolution, Syria has directed its permanent delegation to register Syria's vote at the Security Council as follows:
Syria has for years demanded lifting the sanctions imposed on Iraq and lifting the injustice done to them due to the hard siege, and the lack of medicine.
In view of Syria's leadership and people's care to improve the living standards of the brotherly people of Iraq, Syria decided to vote in favor of the draft-resolution inspite of her conviction that such a resolution doesn't meet the Iraqi people's aspirations of having a free sovereign state and unified land and people who enjoy their natural resources and play an effective role regionally and internationally.
Syria's voting in favor of the resolution doesn't mean at all a change in its position that has opposed the war which Syria has considered as illegal, because no one can imagine that the United Nations can give legality to foreign occupation.
Syria has tried with other Security Council member countries to substantially modify the draft-resolution which was proposed to give the United Nations a pivotal role in Iraq to ensure the return of the Iraqi resources to their Iraqi owners and end of occupation as soon as possible.
Syria's voting in favor of the resolution came in conformity with her constant care to maintain the unity of the council since it is the main frame to preserve the international legitimacy.
